  • Biography:

Emily Halajian is a PhD student at the University of Toronto in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, in Dr. Samira Mubareka’s lab. She received her MSc from Queen’s University, where she studied the mosquito-borne dengue virus, and where she first realized her love of virology. During her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta, Emily studied the behaviour and ecology of Canadian and tropical bats, which contributed to her interest in studying One Health and zoonoses. Currently, Emily studies highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) pathogenesis in humans and domestic swine, which act as a mixing vessel for influenza viruses. Her research focuses on utilizing in vitro systems like primary human and swine respiratory cells and molecular virology.
