Katrina Di Bacco

Katrina graduated from McGill University with a B.Sc. in Wildlife Biology. Passionate about the environment and animals, she worked as an assistant technician in a veterinary clinic while pondering the next steps in her career. It was through direct observation of parasites on and in cats and dogs that she decided to specialize in parasitology. She then pursued a Master's degree in Parasitology at McGill University, where she studied an ectoparasite of guppies. As part of her PhD, Katrina aims to estimate, for the first time, the prevalence of four zoonotic parasites (Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara spp., Echinococcus spp. and Baylisascaris procyonis) in humans in Canada. It will also draw on pre-existing data to estimate the prevalence of these infections in animals and the environment. Katrina a obtenu un baccalauréat en biologie de la faune à l'Université McGill. Passionnée par l'environnement et les animaux, elle a travaillé comme technicienne adjointe dans une clinique vétérinaire en réfléchissant aux prochaines étapes de sa carrière. C'est en observant directement la présence de parasites sur et dans des chats et des chiens qu'elle a décidé de se spécialiser en parasitologie. Elle a ensuite poursuivi une maîtrise en parasitologie à l'Université McGill, où elle a étudié un ectoparasite des guppies. Dans le cadre de son doctorat, Katrina vise à estimer, pour la première fois, la prévalence de quatre parasites zoonotiques (Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara spp., Echinococcus spp. et Baylisascaris procyonis) chez les humains au Canada. Elle s’appuiera également sur des données préexistantes pour estimer la prévalence de ces infections chez les animaux et dans l’environnement.
