Curious About Joining Canopy as a Trainee?

Contributing to a growing national community of practice in One Health and emerging zoonoses.

What we offer

Canopy offers the opportunity to build meaningful connections with peers, mentors, and professionals across disciplines, sectors, and regions of Canada.

Opportunities for Trainees

Supporting Canada’s Next Generation of One Health Leaders

Canopy aims to support trainees in completing their graduate programs and/or a complementary internship (distinct from their current research program) that will enhance Canada’s ability to prevent, prepare for, or respond to emerging zoonotic diseases using a One Health approach.

As part of the program, trainees will be able to participate in targeted One Health learning opportunities and deepen their engagement with Indigenous perspectives and other knowledge systems.

Two Streams of Support

SUPPORT

Interested trainees can apply for funding and to join the platform through two different streams:

Subject to eligibility requirements, trainees may apply
to both streams in the same year.

Research scholarship (1 year)

Canopy will offer a scholarship of 5,000$ to each successful applicant interested in One Health and whose research relates to the prevention, preparedness for, or response to emerging zoonotic diseases.

Internship support (up to 3 months)

Canopy will offer up to 10,000$ to each successful applicant to support short-term internships/placements in institutions involved in the prevention, preparedness for, and response to emerging zoonotic diseases. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve gathered answers to some of the most common questions about eligibility, mentorship, funding, and timelines for Canopy trainee opportunities. If you don’t find what you’re looking for here, feel free to reach out to our team.

Do I need to provide a letter of support from my proposed mentor?
No, you do not need to submit a letter of support. We will send a short questionnaire to mentors after you have submitted your application.
Can I ask anyone to be my mentor?
There is no pool of mentors from which you need to choose. You are required to propose a mentor who is aware and agrees to mentor you, meets the eligibility criteria (listed in the call), and agrees to the expectations of mentors (also listed in the call).
When will the results be announced?
The date by which we expect to announce results will be stated on the call for applications. Typically, the call for applications will be open for 3-4 weeks, and we expect results to be communicated up to two months after the call closes.
How and when will I receive my award?
If your application is successful, awards will be sent to your mentor, who will transfer the funds to you. If your mentor does not hold an account at an academic institution, you will need to identify someone at your academic institution who is able to receive and transfer funds to you. The transfer process can take several weeks once agreements are signed, especially during holidays.
I’m located outside of Canada. Are there opportunities to get involved with Canopy?
Unfortunately, trainee opportunities are only available to individuals based in Canada. However, if you’re interested in contributing to the program, we welcome mentors from outside Canada and encourage you to get in touch.
Do I need to attend the workshops in-person?
Yes, trainees are expected to attend the workshops in-person. Exceptional circumstances will be considered.
